Swensons’ Galley Boy featured as monthly burger special at acclaimed Hamburger America in New York City

CLEVELAND — Swensons’ famous Galley Boy is going on tour to the Big Apple.

The legendary double cheeseburger invented in Akron is March’s featured monthly burger at celebrity chef George Motz’s New York City restaurant Hamburger America.

Motz started Hamburger America’s Monthly Burger Special to celebrate the diverse styles of burgers served across the country. The Galley Boy is the 11th burger to be showcased at Motz’s SoHo luncheonette. It will be on the menu there from March 5 to April 8.

The Galley Boy, which consists of a “double cheeseburg” with a mild barbecue sauce, a tartar sauce-like mayo based condiment and a toasted bun speared with an olive, is no stranger to national plaudits. The Swensons staple was named Ohio’s finest burger in Readers Digest’s 2022 and 2024 rankings of the best burger in every U.S. state.

Last year, Swensons celebrated its 90th anniversary. The company recently reopened its original West Akron location, which had closed after a car crashed into the building.

“The Swensons’ journey began in 1934 when Wesley T. ‘Pop’ Swenson started selling fresh-ground burgers to his Akron neighbors out of the back of his family station wagon,” the company explains on their site. “The operation soon moved to a single hamburger stand, where it embraced the classic American drive-in model. 87 years later, the Swensons experience remains largely unchanged.”

Motz, whom the New York Times once dubbed a “leading authority on hamburgers,” opened Hamburger America in 2023, drawing inspiration from his documentary and cookbook of the same name. Motz was also known as the host of “Burger Land” on Travel Channel.
